Chat Potatoes

Rating: 4.9 out of 5

Chats are just a smaller version of a variety, and while they may be small, they are mighty!  Waxy ones steam and boil like champs for your salads, while starchy chats bring the heat when roasted, fried, or made into smashies. Chats are perfect for whatever spud mission you’ve got cooking!

Chats are small, young potatoes picked early and graded by size, usually somewhere around golf ball sized. Chat is a size, and ours come from a rotating selection of the varieties we grow and stock, which is why you'll see different names in the selector above. Waxy or starchy, every chat arrives washed and skin on, ready to cook whole.

Chats generally go straight from the bag to the pot or tray. Their size means they cook whole, with no peeling or chopping to get through first, and consistent grading means they cook evenly together.

For a weeknight dinner that saves you time at the bench. For a commercial kitchen it saves labour at scale: a service worth of potatoes prepped in the time it takes to turn the oven on.

Waxy chats hold their shape through boiling and steaming, which makes them the pick for salads, dressings and anything served whole. Starchy chats are built for the oven and the fryer: roasted, deep fried or flattened into smashies, they generally give you a crisp outside and a fluffy centre. The selector shows which type each variety is, and the Surprise option lets us pick the best of what's in.

Chats are one of the most reliable items we supply. Our grower network keeps quality and grading consistent across the year, and the rotating varieties mean there's usually a waxy and a starchy option available whatever the season. If your kitchen runs on chats, or you'd like it to, our wholesale team can set up standing orders at volume.
